An educational and research facility-The HbN ASG was designed to showcase available technology and methods of aquaponic growing. We provide educational and research facilities to schools, universities, public & private groups.
We run 5-day, 2-day and 1-day courses, run by experienced scientists, technicians and Aquaponics growers. We also run tours for interested organisations and groups, schools Universities etc.
We use a flood and drain system in our main setup, and smaller-scale vertical growing; DWC, Autopot and coir-based systems, all fed by our Tilapia’s waste.
The crops we grow are sold to a variety of local businesses and individuals: grocers; restaurants; caterers; producers etc. After a year of experimentation and reseach on which crops grow well in our system, and which are in demand, we now concentrate on various salad leaves, watercress, herbs and chillies, alonside continuing experimentation.
We aim to support and develop the growth of Aquaponics in the UK as a sustainable food production technique. We are open to our facilities being used as research and development in these areas, and to educate and inspire future generations in Aquaponics as a sustainable method of growing, particularly in the area of sustainable fish food, in which we carry out our own research.
We have an established colony of Black soldier flies which breed readily, and are fed on our waste vegetable matter, and are working with Sheffield University to research and develop the BSF larvae as a sustainable animal feed.
